There’s certain deliberateness to Jen Gloeckner’s sophomore album Mouth of Mars—a sensitivity for precision that stems from years of work since the Iowan released her debut Miles Away. Unlike that 2004 effort, Mouth of Mars is a textured affair, an evocative exposé of ethereal songwriting masked under a lucid haze that blends perfectly with Glockner’s earthy drawl (“Sleep to Dream”). At times, Mouth is downright frightening—“Haunt You” features some eerie acoustic gui- tar work that recalls Radiohead’s haunting “Exit Music (For a Film).” The album’s brief inter- mission—the jazzy, sprightly “Let’s Get Honest”—plays the out- lier, “Peace from the Chaos” of Gloeckner’s abstract, introspec- tive mind.
